Memory consolidation — keeping your OpenClaw agent's memory lean and useful
Your agent has been running for three months. It’s stored 800 memories. And its recall quality is getting worse.
Not because the search is bad — because the memories are. Duplicates, contradictions, outdated facts, and five variations of the same preference clogging up every recall result. Your agent stored “user prefers TypeScript” in January, “use TypeScript, not JavaScript” in February, and “TypeScript for all new projects” last week. Three memories saying the same thing, all competing for relevance.
This is the memory bloat problem, and every long-running agent hits it eventually.
Why memory bloat kills recall quality
MemoClaw uses semantic vector search for recall. When you search for “language preferences,” it returns the top results ranked by similarity. If you have five near-identical memories about TypeScript, they’ll take up five of your result slots — pushing out other relevant memories about build tools, frameworks, or project structure.
It’s like having a filing cabinet where the same memo was photocopied five times and stuffed in different folders. When you search for something, you keep finding copies instead of the other documents you actually need.
Worse, some of those copies might contradict each other. Maybe in February you stored “migrating to Rust for performance-critical services.” Now your agent recalls both “always use TypeScript” and “migrating to Rust” and has to guess which one is current.
The consolidate endpoint
MemoClaw has a consolidate feature that fixes this. It uses GPT-4o-mini to:
- Find related memories — Groups memories with similar content
- Merge duplicates — Combines redundant memories into a single, cleaner version
- Resolve conflicts — When memories contradict, it keeps the most recent information
- Reduce noise — Strips out low-value fragments that don’t add useful context
Here’s what it looks like via the CLI:

That’s it. One command. It scans your memories, finds clusters of related content, and merges them down.
You can also scope it to a namespace:
memoclaw consolidate --namespace project-x
This is useful if you only want to clean up one project’s memories without touching the rest.
What consolidation actually does
Say you have these three memories:
- “User wants responses in bullet points” (stored Jan 15, importance: 0.6)
- “Format all responses as bullet points, not paragraphs” (stored Feb 3, importance: 0.7)
- “User prefers concise bullet-point formatting for all output” (stored Feb 28, importance: 0.5)
After consolidation, you get one memory:
- “User prefers concise bullet-point formatting for all responses. Use bullet points, not paragraphs.” (importance: 0.7, merged from 3 sources)
Three result slots become one. The next recall has room for three other relevant memories.
When to consolidate
Don’t consolidate after every session. It costs $0.01 per call (it uses GPT-4o-mini under the hood), and running it too often wastes money on memories that haven’t had time to accumulate duplicates.
Good rules of thumb:
- Weekly if your agent stores 10+ memories per day
- Bi-weekly if your agent stores 3-10 memories per day
- Monthly if your agent is used casually (a few memories per week)
If you’re not sure, check your memory count:

If you’re over 500 memories, it’s probably time for a first consolidation. If recall results feel noisy or repetitive, definitely consolidate.
Automating consolidation in OpenClaw
You probably don’t want to remember to run this manually. Two ways to automate it:
Option 1: cron job
Set up an OpenClaw cron job that runs consolidation weekly:

This runs in isolation — no impact on your agent’s main session. Set and forget.
Option 2: heartbeat-based
Add a consolidation check to your agent’s HEARTBEAT.md:
## Weekly memory maintenance
- If it's Monday and consolidation hasn't run this week:
- Run `memoclaw consolidate`
- Log the result to memory/heartbeat-state.json
This approach piggybacks on your existing heartbeat cycle. The downside is it only triggers if your agent is actively running heartbeats.
Which one to pick
Cron is more reliable — it runs regardless of whether your agent is active. Heartbeat-based is simpler if you already have a heartbeat loop and don’t want another scheduled task.
Cost math
Consolidation costs $0.01 per call. If you run it weekly, that’s roughly $0.04/month. Even daily consolidation is only $0.30/month. Not exactly budget-breaking.
The real savings come from better recall quality. If your agent is doing fewer redundant recalls because results are cleaner, you might actually save money overall. Fewer “let me search again because the first results were garbage” cycles.
Compare this to the alternative: manually reviewing and pruning memories. That’s your time, which is worth a lot more than a penny.
Before and after
Here’s a real scenario. Agent has been running for 2 months, ~400 memories stored.
Before consolidation — recall for “deployment process”:
- “Deploy to Railway via git push” (Jan 10)
- “Deployment uses Railway, push to main” (Jan 22)
- “Railway deployment — push to main branch triggers auto-deploy” (Feb 5)
- “Added staging environment on Railway” (Feb 15)
- “Deploy: push to main for prod, push to staging branch for staging” (Feb 28)
Five results, mostly saying the same thing, with the full picture only emerging if you read all of them.
After consolidation — same recall:
- “Deployment: Railway auto-deploys from git. Push to main for production, staging branch for staging environment. Added staging Feb 2026.” (merged)
- “Railway environment variables are set via dashboard, not .env files” (separate memory, now visible)
- “Deployment rollback: use Railway dashboard to redeploy previous commit” (separate memory, now visible)
One consolidated memory covers the basics. Two other actually useful memories now surface that were previously buried under duplicates.
Namespace-scoped consolidation
If you use namespaces (and you should for multi-project agents), consolidate per namespace:

memoclaw consolidate --namespace project-y
This is better than global consolidation because memories from different projects won’t accidentally merge, you can consolidate active projects more frequently, and archived projects can be left alone.
Best practices
Run memoclaw stats before your first consolidation so you know what you’re working with. If you want a backup, memoclaw export is free and gives you a snapshot before anything changes.
Consolidate per namespace if you have distinct projects — don’t let unrelated memories accidentally merge. After consolidating, do a few test recalls to check that quality actually improved.
Weekly is plenty for most agents. Daily is only worth it if you’re storing dozens of memories per day.

Memory consolidation isn’t glamorous. It’s the “defrag your hard drive” of agent memory. But it directly improves your agent’s recall quality, keeps costs predictable, and stops the slow decay that makes long-running agents progressively dumber.
